Baseball Whitewashes Wright State, 5-0|
April 19, 2002
Chicago, Ill. - Hits were few and far between for both the University of Illinois at Chicago and Wright State in their Horizon League baseball tilt as a gael-force wind sailed directly in the faces of the batters on Friday night, which made for a combined 15 hits between the Flames and Raiders.
UIC sophomore first baseman Mike Lorenzo (Lockport, Ill./Providence), however, made the most of his opportunities as he went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI to propel the Flames to the 5-0 victory at Les Miller Field.
With the victory, UIC improves to 25-7 overall and 6-2 in Horizon League play, while the Raiders fall to 10-20 on the 2002 campaign and 3-6 in league action.
Senior right hander Larry Banks tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only six hits while striking out four batters to improve his record to 7-3 on the season. Wright State's Brian Stephens falls to 2-6, on the campaign.
Sophomore Mark Homco (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and junior Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./T.F. South) opened the bottom of the sixth-inning with back-to-back singles to set the stage for a two-run double by Lorenzo.
Sophomore right fielder Mike Hughes (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) advanced Lorenzo to third on a sacrifice bunt. Junior catcher Kevin Nelson then plated Lorenzo with a fielder's choice to put the Flames ahead, 3-0.
Lorenzo helped the UIC's cause again in the bottom of the seventh inning as he roped his third double of the game to score both Homco and Granderson to extend the Flames' lead to 5-0.
Both teams will do battle again tomorrow for a doubleheader at Les Miller field, beginning at 1:05 PM.
