Baseball Soars Past Eagles, 20-6|
April 16, 2002
Chicago, Illinois - The winds were blowing out on Tuesday evening, and the University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team made the most of it.
The Flames connected for five home runs, including two grand slams, to cruise past Judson College for the 20-6 victory at Les Miller Field on Tuesday night. With the victory, UIC improves to 24-6 overall and Judson College drops to 9-17.
Senior John Rosner (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) led the charge for the Flames as he went 3-for-3 with four runs and six RBI, including a grand slam home run in the fourth inning. Rosner tied a Les Miller Field record with six RBI, last set by teammate Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) in 2000. Nelson added the other grand slam blast for UIC in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Sophomore catcher Mike Hughes got the ball rolling for UIC in the second inning as he took a Jason Roth offering over the fence for a three-run homer.
The Eagles bounced back in the top of the third and tied the ballgame behind a two-run single from first baseman Eric Blaeser and a RBI single from Ryan Koerner.
UIC put the game out of reach as they scored seven unanswered runs, led by five RBI from Rosner in the third and fourth inning. Chris Kerpan (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and Bryan Russo (Davie, Fla./American Heritage) each added RBI for the Flames during that span to give UIC a 10-3 lead.
Judson scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Flames answered right back in the bottom half of the frame with a five-spot of their own. Sophomore designated hitter Mike Lorenzo (Lockport, Ill./Providence) connected for a two-run homer, his third of the season, while Kerpan (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Rosner each chipped in RBI singles.
The Flames weren't done yet as Nelson and Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./T.F. South) each connected for homers.
Nelson issued a grand slam blast in the bottom of the seventh, while Granderson launched his team-leading sixth homer, a solo shot, in the eighth inning.
Senior Kevin Ryan (Elmhurst, Ill./York) earned the victory for UIC and improved his record to 2-0 on the season. Roth took the loss for the Eagles as he gave up 13 runs and 13 hits.
UIC will be back in action tonight as they will host in-state rival, Northern Illinois, at 6:05 PM at Les Miller Field.
