Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago first baseman Andy Deahl (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) ripped a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-all tie and give the Flames the 3-2 victory and the doubleheader sweep over the Bulldogs at Les Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.

UIC captured the 7-1 victory over Butler in the opening game behind a strong pitching performance from senior southpaw Wes Gilliam (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood). Gilliam scattered six hits and struck out four batters earned the complete-game victory for the Flames and improves his record to 5-0 on the season.

With the sweep, UIC improves to 22-7 overall and 4-3 in Horizon League play, while Butler falls to 19-12 on the season and 3-4 in league play.

The Flames exciting seventh inning began when sophomore shortstop Mike Bruszer (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) took a Corey Kugle offering off the helmet and took first base. Bruszer (2-for-3, 2 runs) advanced to second base on a Kugle wild pitch.

Deahl supplied the late-inning heroics as he smacked a liner that glanced off Butler second baseman Nick Bridich and scored Bruszer from second base.

Freshman Ryan Gehring (Burlington, Wis./Central Catholic) earned his first-career complete-game victory as he scattered ten hits and struck out four batters to keep his record flawless at 5-0.

The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team stranded a total of 10 runners on base against Butler on Friday night as the Flames dropped an 8-3 decision to the Bulldogs.

The bases were bare on Saturday as UIC rolled to the 7-1 victory over the Bulldogs in a Horizon League doubleheader at Les Miller Field.

In game two, sophomore third baseman Mark Homco (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) led the offensive charge for the Flames as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./T.F. South) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.



Freshman Bryan Russo (Davie, Fla./American Heritage) opened up the bottom of the third inning with a single and was sacrificed over by Bruszer. Russo moved over to third on a groundout by Deahl and scored on an infield single by Granderson.

Granderson stole second and scored on a RBI single by senior center fielder John Rosner (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) to extend the Flames' lead to 3-1.

UIC put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore designated hitter Mike Lorenzo (Lockport, Ill./Providence), Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows), Homco and Russo each notched RBI singles for the Flames.

UIC will be back in action tomorrow as the Flames will host Butler for the final game of the series at 12:05 P.M.
