    Chicago, Ill. - The tandem of senior left fielder Mike Hughes and junior catcher Justin Johnson proved to be a formidable foe for Wright State pitching as the duo went a combined 5-for-8 from the plate with five RBI and four runs scored to lift the University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team to the 9-7 victory over the Raiders in their Horizon League opener at Les Miller Field on Friday night.

    Hughes was 2-for-3 at the dish with three runs scored and two RBI, while Johnson had three hits, three RBI and a run scored to pace the Flames offensively.

    With the victory, UIC improves to 17-9 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League play, while the Raiders drop to 11-17 on the campaign and 3-2 in conference action.

    UIC junior lefthander Ryan Gehring improved his record to a league-best 5-2, while junior southpaw David Haehnel struck out three batters in 1.1 innings of relief to pick up his second save of the season.

    Wright State starter Chris Snyder gave up eight runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings of work, falling to 1-2 on the season.

    Wright State junior catcher Bryan Vickers connected for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Raiders.

    Both teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, with a twinbill slated for 1:05 p.m.
