EVANSTON, Ill. – The UIC baseball team (13-13) dropped a non-conference road game on Wednesday afternoon at Northwestern (12-9) by a final score of 3-1 inside the confines of Rocky Miller Park. The Flames had trouble finding their offensive groove as NU starting pitcher Reed Mason scattered five hits over seven innings for the win. Sophomore Tyler Detmer shined at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 as he posted the lone RBI for UIC.
“Any time these two teams play it’s going to be a battle,” said head coach Mike Dee. “We have to put today behind us and look ahead to Valparaiso this weekend.”
Redshirt junior Mike McKinley received the nod against the Wildcats and was effective during his 5.2 innings of work. McKinley allowed just five hits and three runs, while striking out five NU batters. Senior Tim Suminski and sophomore Alex Posey combined to hold Northwestern scoreless in the final 2.1 innings, allowing just three hits.
The Flames scored their single run in the top of the eighth as senior Ryan Shober began the frame with a bunt-single. Shober was called safe at first as he dove to beat the throw. He was then pushed over to second base on a balk call and Detmer sent him home on a single to centerfield.
UIC will be back in action on Friday as they begin a three-game series at defending Horizon League Champion Valparaiso. Friday’s game will start at 3 p.m. CT as Saturday and Sunday’s contest is scheduled to commence at 1 p.m.
