Baseball Blanks Valparaiso, 5-0|
March 27, 2007
Chicago, Ill.- Ryan Zink tossed six innings of scoreless three-hit ball to pace the UIC baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Valparaiso at Les Miller Field on Tuesday evening.
In his sharpest start since returning from arm surgery in 2006, Zink struck out five Crusader hitters without a walk and combined with Joe Skinner, Andrew Davis and Cales to turn in UIC's first shutout of the year.
The Flames scored their first run with excellent execution in the third. Chad Schroeder and Nick Rainwater led off the inning with singles, advancing a base following a sacrifice bunt by Larry Gempp Jr. Ben Trotter then drove in Schroeder on a sacrifice fly to center.
UIC then posted a four-spot in the following frame. Carr led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall, followed by singles off the bats of Tyler Moore and David Cales. Chris Rutta's sac bunt moved the runners up a base, and Schroeder's squeeze bunt allowed Moore to score.
Rainwater grounded out to drive in UIC's third run of the inning, and Gempp capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The pitching took care of the rest, as Valparaiso (4-12) was unable to get anything going offensively.
UIC continues its 10-game homestand by hosting Illinois Tech at Les Miller Field this Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
