    Box Score

Chicago, Ill. - Sophomore Bryan Russo went 4-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and two RBI to help host UIC to the 14-8 non-conference victory in game one of their doubleheader against Chicago State at Les Miller Field on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore left-handers Ryan Gehring and David Haehnel combined to toss a complete-game four hit shutout as the Flames picked up the 5-0 victory over the Cougars in the nightcap.

Gehring allowed three hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters to improve his record to 3-1 on the season. Gehring has given up four hits and no runs in his last 13 innings.

With the sweep, UIC moves back to the .500 mark at 9-9, while Chicago State falls to 2-11 on the campaign.

Freshman John Flood (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory in game one, allowing five runs, five hits while striking out two batters in seven innings of work. Chicago State's Danny Braswell (1-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs and 13 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Joining Russo in the offensive frenzy in the opener were shortstop Jordan DeVoir (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), outfielder J.P. Moran (2-for-3, 2 runs), first baseman Brad Ryan (3-for-4, 2RBI, run), right fielder Mike Hughes (3-for-3, homer, 2 RBI, run) and outfielder Marcus Goodman (2-run homer)

Chicago State catcher John Szykowny (3-run) and center fielder Mike Slowik (solo) each tagged homers for the Cougars in the opener.

UIC got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning of the nightcap as Russo roped a two-out single. Russo stole second base and advanced to third base on a throwing error by Chicago State catcher Brian Grippo. Cougars' starter Jason Stamper (0-3) then uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Russo to score and put the Flames ahead 1-0.

UIC extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior left fielder Chuck Peters (2-for-2, 2 RBI) blasted a two-run homer - his second of the season - over the left-center field fence.

The Flames added some insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth, as Moran (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) connected for a two-run homer to extend UIC's lead to 5-0.

Both teams will be at it again on Sunday afternoon, with a twin-bill slated for 12:05 p.m. at Les Miller Field.
