Baseball Takes Finale, Weekend Series From UW-Milwaukee|
March 25, 2006
Chicago, Ill.- Junior lefthander Joe Skinner pitched 6.1 outstanding innings to pick up his first victory in a UIC uniform, and two RBI from both Mark Hallberg and Justin Johnson gave the Flames a 5-3 win over UW-Milwaukee in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Les Miller Field.
The win was the fifth in the last seven contests for the Flames, who split Saturday's doubleheader against UW-Milwaukee to take the three-game weekend series.
Bart Babineaux also drove in a run on his second homer of the season to give UIC (8-11, 2-1 Horizon) a big insurance run late in the game.
Skinner held the Panthers (6-10, 1-2 Horizon) at bay most of the game, limiting UW-Milwaukee to just three hits in his first six innings of work.
Hallberg started off the scoring in the Flames' first go-around. With Larry Gempp Jr. on second, the sophomore second baseman smashed a double to right field to drive in Gempp and give UIC a 1-0 lead.
Hallberg struck again in the third inning, hitting a double to left field to score Nick Rainwater and push the Flames' lead to two runs.
Johnson picked up his two RBI in that same inning, bashing a single into right field to drive in Ted Rosinski and Hallberg.
UW-Milwaukee would score three runs in the seventh inning to cut the UIC lead to 4-3. But the relief combination of Adam Worthington and Jason Foster, who picked up his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth, shut down the Panthers' offense the rest of the way.
Babineaux gave UIC a two-run lead with his solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.
Worthington made two strong appearances during the doubleheader, pitching 1.2 innings in each game and fanning three.
Hallberg went 4-for-9 during the doubleheader with five RBI and two runs scored. All four of his hits were RBI doubles.
UIC faces Valparaiso this Wednesday in Valparaiso, Ind., at 2:00 p.m.
