DAYTON, Ohio - The UIC baseball team won its Horizon League-opening contest over defending tournament champions Wright State on Friday night by a final score of 5-1. Junior pitcher Joey Begel was credited with the win as he threw seven innings, allowing just one earned run.
“I thought we competed really well tonight,” said head coach Mike Dee. “There were a few moments where I thought the game could have gone either way and our guys stayed relaxed. Joey Begel was outstanding and so was Matt Heaslip on mound for us. I’m very pleased with our effort.”
UIC struck first in the top of the fourth inning as Grunenwald blasted a two-run homer, sending himself and Betcher around the bases. Betcher started the inning with a single to center field.
Both squads tacked one run on in the fifth frame, bringing the score to 4-1. The Flames closed the door in the top of the seventh inning with two additional scores, sealing the 5-1 triumph.
Game two of the three-game stint will commence at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Brian Evak is set to start for the Flames, the reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week.
