Baseball Picks Up First Victory Of Season Over UL-Lafayette
March 14, 2003 Lafayette, La. - The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak as they scored eight unanswered runs to earn the 11-4 victory, their first of the season, over UL-Lafayette on Friday night. With the victory, UIC improves to 1-6 on the campaign, while UL-Lafayette falls to 5-16. Junior outfielder J.P. Moran led UIC offensively as the Burlington, Wis., native went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Kevin Nelson (RBI) and third baseman Nelson Gord (2 RBI) also picked up three hits apiece for the Flames. Sophomore second baseman Bryan Russo (2-for-6, 2 Runs, RBI) launched his first career homer with a solo shot. Sophomore left-hander Ryan Gehring (1-2) scattered 10 hits and struck out six batters for the complete-game victory for the Flames, while Kevin Ardoia (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the host Cajuns.
