Baseball Beats Illinois, 7-4
March 2, 2008 Waco, Texas- The UIC baseball team scored seven times in the second and third innings to defeat Illinois, 7-4, in a shortened six-inning game on the final day of the QTI Baylor Classic on Sunday. Both the Flames and the Fighting Illini moved to 2-4 after the contest, which was called in the middle of the sixth to accommodate travel plans. After Illinois struck first with an unearned run in the top of second, UIC scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kevin Coddington and Andy Leonard plated runs on RBI hits, while Jason Ganek added another run on an RBI groundout. The Flames added four more runs in the fourth. Coddington grounded out to drive in another run, followed by Brett Schaefer's RBI single. The scoring was capped by Ganek's two-run single that put the Flames up 7-1. Illinois scored a run in the fourth to cut its deficit to 7-2. The Illini scored two more runs off of reliever Don Phillis in the sixth, but Adam Worthington fanned pinch-hitter John Schlichter for what turned out to be the final out of the game. Starting pitcher Mike Kool earned the win with three innings of one-hit baseball. Illinois' Aaron Martin took the loss after allowing six runs and six hits in 2.2 innings. The Flames outhit Illinois by an 11-5 margin. UIC heads to Nashville next weekend for a four-game series against fifth-ranked Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field beginning Thursday, Mar. 6.
