Waco, Texas- Ty Rubio drove in three of the Flames' nine runs as the UIC baseball team defeated Stephen F. Austin, 9-3, in the opener of the third annual QTI Baylor Classic at Baylor Ballpark on Friday afternoon.

After scoring just five runs combined in three games last weekend, UIC (1-3) reached home plate six times between the third and sixth innings alone to turn an early 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 lead.

Starter Grant Kohlstaedt settled down after allowing a two-run homer to the Lumberjacks' (3-3) second hitter of the game, giving up just one more run in a five-inning outing to earn the victory.

The Flames took the lead in the fourth on Jason Ganek's sacrifice fly RBI that broke a 2-2 tie.

UIC never looked back, adding six more scores in the final five frames.

Don Phillis and Adam Worthington combined for four innings of one-hit scoreless relief to shut down the Lumberjack bats.

The Flames resume their stay at the QTI Baylor Classic on Saturday night against the host Bears. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m., with live video streamed through www.baylorbears.com.
