SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The UIC baseball team (3-3) picked up a series win at Santa Clara (3-4) by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday at Schott Stadium.   The Flames dropped game #2, 10-3, but triumphed in the rubber match by a final score of 15-8.  UIC’s bats came alive today as the team combined for 28 hits throughout both contests.

“We are very happy with the weekend,” said head coach Mike Dee.  “Winning a series on the west coast in February is a tough thing to do.  We took a big step forward at the plate this weekend and continued to play good defense.  This team has strong character that will undoubtedly continue to strengthen as the season progresses.”

    GAME ONE RECAP

The Flames jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as junior John Coen started things with a double down the left field line.  He was pushed over to third as the next batter, Alex De LaRosa, grounded out to the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt.  After Ryan Shober reached base on a walk, sophomore Tyler Detmer drove Coen home on sac fly to center field.

Santa Clara responded with a lone run in the bottom of the fourth frame off a solo shot by Quinton Perry.  It was in the bottom of the fifth that the Broncos lit of the scoreboard for five runs, pulling ahead of the Flames, 6-1.

UIC made a mini run in the top of the seventh with two scores as Harry Kammholz slapped a single to the shortstop to begin the frame.  Joe Betcher sent Kammholz over to second on a single left field and then Alex Jurich moved both runners up one bag with a one-baser to right field.  Coen recorded the first RBI as he was walked, which forced Kammholz across home plate.  De LaRosa tallied the second RBI on a double-play ground out as Betcher was able to trot home, cutting the Broncos lead to 7-3.

Santa Clara answered with a run in the bottom half of the seventh and tacked on the final runs of game in the eighth with three scores to seal the 10-3 victory.

    GAME TWO RECAP

Seven UIC players recorded multiple hits as Jurich led the way by finishing 3-for-3 at the plate, while adding three runs.  Coen and Alex Grunenwald posted four RBI apiece to account for over half of the Flames’ offensive production.

Senior Joey Begel was credited with win as he lasted five innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out four SC batters.

Grunenwald notched his third homer of the season with a three-RBI jack to left field and Ryan Boss drove in Shober with a single to give UIC a 4-0 lead out of the gate.  The Broncos matched UIC’s four runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a three-RBI double from Perry.

UIC clipped on a run in the second and tallied three more in the third to pull ahead, 8-4.  In the third, Coen drilled a triple to left field that scored a pair of runs and De LaRosa followed that up with an RBI double.

Santa Clara took back one of those scores in the bottom of sixth, but UIC countered with four more runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 12-6.  Coen collected his final two RBI of the night with single up the middle, while Detmer cracked a one-baser to third that scored Shober.

Both teams tacked on a run in the eighth and the Flames added two more scores in the top of the ninth, bringing the final score to 15-8.

The Flames return to action on Friday, March 1 as they travel to second-ranked Vanderbilt for a three-game series.
