Tallahassee, Florida - Sophomore shortstop Mike Bruszer (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to help the University of Illinois at Chicago baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Florida A&M in their season opener on Friday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.

UIC got things going in the second inning as juniors Chuck Peters (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) opened up the frame with a pair of singles.

Freshman Bryan Russo (Davie, Fla./American Heritage) advanced them over a base with a fielder's choice and Bruszer brought the pair home with a RBI single up the middle.

Florida A&M answered with a run in the bottom half of the second frame with a RBI groundout by Manuel Quinones to cut the Flames lead in half at 2-1.

Errors, however, proved costly for Florida A&M in the sixth inning as the Flames earned two insurance runs off two errors to put the game out of reach for the Rattlers.

Senior right-hander Larry Banks (1-0) earned the victory for the Flames, scattering five hits over eight innings. Junior transfer Eric Xidis struck out two batters in the ninth to preserve the victory for UIC.

Mike Sills (1-2) took the loss for the Rattlers as he tossed eight innings, scattering eight hits while giving up only two earned runs.

UIC (1-0) and Florida A&M (4-8) will be back at it again on Saturday at Moore-Kittles Field with the first pitch slated for 12:00 PM (CST).
