Baseball Drops A Pair Of One-Run Outings At Belmont
Feb. 17, 2001
Nashville, Tenn. - The UIC baseball team suffered a pair of one-run losses to Belmont on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-7 in the nightcap. The defeats drop the Flames' overall record to 1-4 while the Bruins upped their winning streak to three straight games with a 3-1 record.
In game one, Belmont struck early against UIC starter Steve Carlson (Newark, Ill./Newark), as they put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning and one more in the second on four of their five hits in the game for a 3-0 lead.
The Flames, who didn't pick up their first hit of the game until the fourth inning, were able to cut into Belmont's lead once they finally got their bats going in the fourth frame. After J.P. Moran (Burlington, Wis./Westosha Central) led off the inning with a walk, Weber Bowen (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third for UIC.
Bob Rosinski (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) then roped a double to center field to score both Moran and Bowen and put the Flames down by just one, 3-2.
UIC, however, saw its offense stall down the stretch, as it had four runners picked off of first base in the fourth and fifth innings while registering just one more hit, a double by Rosinski with no one on in the sixth inning.
Carlson, who settled down nicely, took the loss for UIC as he went the distance and allowed five hits, three runs, two earned runs and one walk with six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Flames built themselves a 7-2 lead heading into the final inning, but then saw it slip away in the bottom of the seventh as an error at third proved to be costly as Belmont tallied six unearned runs to capture the win.
Wesley Peete (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and Chris Kerpan (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) provided UIC with a pair of hot bats as Peete went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Kerpan went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Rosinski's first home run of the season sparked a two-run fifth-inning for the Flames.
Larry Banks (Cicero, Ill./Nazareth Academy) got the start for UIC and worked six and two-thirds innings before turning the mound over to Nick Worm, (Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale) who was handed the heartbreaking loss after giving up a pair of hits and one unearned run.
UIC and Belmont wrap up their series with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
