University of Illinois at Chicago baseball coach Mike Dee also has brought a familiar face to the Flames’ coaching staff as former University of Minnesota standout Troy Stein has been named as a volunteer assistant coach.
Dee served as Minnesota’s pitching coach during Stein’s tenure with the Golden Gophers from 1992-97.
“I’m really familiar with Troy,” Dee said. “He embodies what we want our kids to be like.
“He was a five-year player and a great student,” Dee continued. “He struggled as a freshman, but figured out a way to play and by the time he left Minnesota he was an outstanding player.”
Stein, who previously served as an eighth-grade mathematics teacher at South View Middle School in Edina, Minnesota, will work primarily with the outfielders and will perform various other duties.
“Troy’s coming to us, leaving a great teaching position in one of the best school districts in the state of Minnesota, which tells me that he is highly motivated to coach at this level,” Dee said. “That’s what we were looking for and we feel really lucky to get Troy in that volunteer spot.”
