2009 ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE SECOND TEAM
2009: All-Horizon League Second Team selection in first full season as a starter...made 15 starts and 17 total appearances...finished the year 7-4 overall and unbeaten 6-0 against Horizon League teams...his seven wins led the UIC team...3.69 ERA that ranked fifth in the Horizon League... won his last six decisions of the regular season...allowed just three earned runs in his last 12.2 innings of work of the regular season...turned in eight quality starts (at least six innings and no more than three earned runs allowed)...went the distance, allowing just two unearned runs, against Northwestern on Mar. 14...gave up just on run and fanned a career-high seven hitters in eight innings against Youngstown State on Mar. 27.
2008: Made 20 appearances in first season at UIC, including seven starts...tossed 45.2 innings, the second-most frames pitched by a Flames reliever during the year...debuted with an inning of scoreless relief against Tulane on Feb. 22...made first collegiate start against St. Francis on Mar. 25...allowed just one unearned run and two hits during a 6.1-inning start for the win against Cleveland State on May 11.
2007: Sat out the season to recover from reconstructive surgery to his left ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), also known as Tommy John surgery...obtained a medical redshirt to retain three years of eligibility.
Prior to UIC: Competed for Coastal Carolina University in 2006...made three appearances out of the bullpen...struck out one in 1.2 innings of work...made his collegiate debut against Virginia on Feb. 17, 2006.
Prep/Personal: Two-year letterwinner on the mound for Lincoln-Way East...All-SICA West hurler...posted a 1.95 ERA and a 5-3 record in 60 IP as a senior...turned in a 3.10 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 50 IP as a junior...named the Griffins' Most Valuable Player as a sophomore after going 7-3 with a 1.78 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 51 innings...played summer ball for the Upper Deck Cougars...honor roll student...born June 7, 1987...son of Paul and Roxanne Kovacevich...majoring in management.
