CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team concluded its three-game weekend series against Belmont on Sunday afternoon, as the Flames looked for the series sweep of the Bruins at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
- After the Bruins scratched the board first for the first time in the series in the visiting half of the opening inning with a Sam Slaughter RBI double, the Flames answered back in the bottom of the second inning with brothers Clay Conn and Cole Conn combining to drive in three runs for UIC to take a 3-1 lead.
- The Flames began to pull away in the bottom of the third inning, plating four runs in the frame thanks to a two-RBI double off the bat of Bobby Grimes, and two more runs including Grimes scoring on a wild pitch and a throwing error from Bruins catcher Blake Barton. UIC would add three more runs in the fifth inning, as Rayth Petersen drove home two runs on an RBI single, and another run would come home on the Bruins' third error of the day, bringing the score to 10-1.
- Jeff Zack was very effective in his seventh start of the year, going six and two thirds innings, allowing four earned runs, surrendering three in the seventh before handing the game off to Ryan Karst with a 10-4 lead. The Bruins added one more run to cut the lead to 10-5 in the eighth, but Reece Lawler came on for the second straight game to close the door, and earn the Flames the series sweep, their first as members of the Missouri Valley Conference.
