Baseball Falls Short in Marathon Series Opener Thursday

Flames' Comeback Effort Falls Just Short Against Evansville

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team opened a three-game set against Evansville on Thursday, as the Flames began their final series of the season at Curtis Granderson Stadium. The winner of this weekend's series will guarantee a top-four seed in next week's Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship, which comes with a bye to the second day of competition in the tournament. The Flames also entered the game with a seven-game winning streak, the seventh-longest active winning streak in college baseball.
  • The Flames got on the board first Thursday night, as a Charlie Szykowny RBI single brought home Cole Conn who reached on an Aces error. Scoring first has suited the Flames well this season, as they entered Thursday with a 19-8 record when scoring first.

  • After the Aces tallied a run in the second and one in the third to take the lead, UIC answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third on a Ryan Nagelbach RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
  • The Aces wasted no time answering back, as Evansville put up six runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Eric Roberts, his 20th of the season to make the Aces lead 8-2.
  • Szykowny helped the Flames begin to chip away at the Aces lead in the home half of the fourth, as he drove home his second and third runs of the game on a single up the middle, reducing the deficit to 8-4.

  • The Flames got another pair of runs on back-to-back doubles from Breck Nowik and Carson Roberts in the bottom of the fifth, narrowing the gap to 8-6.

  • Following a Mark Shallenberger RBI single in the top of the seventh, Ryan Nagelbach hit his fifth home run in the last four games, a 370 foot shot to right to cut the lead back to two at 9-7.

  • The Flames would add a run on an RBI groundout from James Harris in the bottom of the ninth, but would fall short by a final score of 9-8.

With the loss, the Flames now need to claim the final two games of the weekend series in order to earn a first round bye in the Missouri Valley Championship next week. Friday night's game is again set for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch, and can be seen live on ESPN+. The game is sponsored by UI Health, and can also be heard free of charge on the Flames Network.
