Softball Wraps Up Weekend Falling to Illinois State in a Doubleheader Sunday

The Flames Collected 21 Hits and Scored Nine Runs Throughout the Afternoon

NORMAL, Ill. – The UIC softball team (0-31, 0-9 MVC) had one of their strongest offensive afternoons, but came up short against Illinois State (17-15, 7-1 MVC) in a doubleheader, 6-3 and 15-6.

Game One
  • Junior Anna Walker got the Flames on board early when she scored senior Jordyn Cebedo from third on a sacrifice fly at the start of the game.
  • That was followed up by a single to left field from senior Carlee Jo Clark, scoring sophomore Hailey Cowing. UIC started early with a 2-0 lead.
  • That lead was extended a few innings later behind an RBI single from sophomore Grace Fleming, her third of the season.
  • Junior Miranda Gomez pitched majority of the game for the Flames. She threw 5.2 innings, struck out a season-high five batters and only allowed one earned run.
  • The Flames ended up with nine hits in the game, which is now the second-most hits in a game for the program this season.
Game Two
  • Clark continued her offensive momentum with a homerun to left centerfield in the middle innings, her second of the season. She is now tied with Cowing for the homerun leader on the Flames.
  • Walker followed that up with her first homerun in Division I, hitting a three-run homerun over the left field wall.
  • Sophomore Jojo Santiago capped off a four-run fifth inning with an RBI single, her first of the season.
  • The Flames last run came from heads-up base running from junior Dee Dee Caskey, scoring on a wild pitch.
  • The Flames finished with 12 hits and six runners coming across home plate, both season-highs for the program.
A Hitting Barrage
  • Finishing the series batting .625, Clark landed five hits, crushed a homerun, and scored two RBIs. She now leads the team in batting average at .295 and co-leading in RBI's with seven.
  • Redshirt senior Maica Ingles continues to get on base for the Flames, finishing the double header with three hits and the series with four. She has now gotten a hit in eight of the last nine games.
  • Fleming doubled her hit total over the weekend with four hits, the most hits she has had in one day in her career at UIC.
  • Caskey had her first multi-hit game of the season in Game Two, going 2-for-3 on the day.
Back Home We Go
  • UIC returns home beginning Tuesday at Flames Field, when they host Valparaiso (3-25, 0-9 MVC) for a one-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be available to stream on ESPN+ or listened to live on the Flames Network.
