Baseball Earns Extra Innings Victory Over Saint Mary's

Flames Win Third Straight Game in Convincing Fashion

MORAGA, CALIF. – The UIC baseball team was back in action Saturday, as it played an afternoon tilt against Saint Mary's in the third game of a four-game series. In their first extra-innings game of the season, the Flames offense erupted in the top half of the tenth to earn their third straight victory.

  • After a slow start to the game, the Flames offense came to life in the third inning, starting with an AJ Henkle solo home run in his first start of the season.
  • Breck Nowik hit his second home run in as many days, a solo shot to give UIC a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning.
  • After the Gaels put up a three-spot in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead, UIC answered in the top of the eighth with an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Nagelbach to level the game at three.
  • The teams would go scoreless in the ninth, and the game would go to extra innings, both teams' first such game of the year.
  • Nowik continued his hot streak to start the year in the top of the 10th, hitting a bases loaded double that scored three.
  • Henkle would add another RBI with a base hit to left field in the inning to give the Flames a four run cushion at 7-3, which would turn out to be the final score.
  • Aiden Pavoris was rock solid in his season debut on the mound for the Flames, going six innings, scattering three hits without allowing a run.
  • Mark McCabe earned the victory in relief, closing out the game in the 10th after coming on with two outs in the eighth inning.

The Flames and Gaels will close out their four-game series Sunday afternoon, with the final game of the series set for a 12:00 p.m. CT first pitch.
