Softball Opens 2023 Slate with Valiant Efforts Against North Texas and St. Francis

The Flames fell in extra innings to Saint Francis and lost to North Texas Friday

ATLANTA - UIC softball (0-2) began their season Friday falling to North Texas (2-0) and Saint Francis (1-1) in the first day of Georgia Tech's Buzz Classic.

The Flames dropped its first game to North Texas 5-0 and fell to Saint Francis 2-1 in extra innings in the team's second game of the day.

MEAN GREEN DEFEAT
  • North Texas got off to a 2-0 start in the bottom of the first inning after a solo homerun by Lexi Cobb and an RBI single from Kalei Christensen.
  • After starting pitcher Miranda Gomez was pulled early in the third, senior Christina Toniolo held the Mean Green to two hits and one earned run.
  • The Flames totaled seven hits, with Jojo Santiago and Anna Walker hitting the teams' lone extra base hits.
  • Santiago led UIC going 2-3 from the batter's box.
  • While UIC had seven hits, the Flames couldn't score any runs and fell to the Mean Green 5-0.
EXTRA INNINGS HEARTBREAK
  • UIC got off to a hot start in its second game against Saint Francis. Junior Dee Dee Caskey lead off the first with a walk before stealing second and third. She scored on a Grace Fleming fielder's choice to give the Flames the 1-0 lead.
  • Toniolo remained in the circle to start Friday's second game. She kept the Red Flash at bay, allowing only one hit over the first four innings.
  • Saint Francis tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a bases loaded single. 
  • The Flames came close to taking the lead back in the seventh. Freshman Jazmyn Casas landed her second hit of the game with a single to right and then stole second. UIC had runners on first and second after senior Mary Jones got hit by a pitch, but the rally was stopped after a Caskey pop out ended the inning. 
  • The Flames kept the Red Flash scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras. 
  • In the eighth, Saint Francis hit a walk-off single to win the game.
The Flames are back at Mewborn Field Saturday for two games as they take on Saint Francis and UConn in the second day of action at the Buzz Classic. UIC begins the day with a 7 a.m. clash against the Red Flash, before facing the Huskies at 1 p.m. Fans can watch both games on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).
