CHICAGO – For the third time this season UIC senior
Jake Dahlberg has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday, May 1.
Â
Dahlberg was as sharp as ever as he put the Flames in position to secure a 1-0 walk-off win over visiting Georgia Tech on Friday, April 28. The Vancouver, Wash., native threw only 91 pitches over a season-high 8.0 scoreless innings against the Yellow Jackets. He scattered only three hits while striking out six and walking only one. It was the eighth shutout of the season posted by the Flames, ranking them tied for the national lead in that category. Dahlberg has started two of those eight games.
Â
Though he did not factor in the decision on Friday, it was the eighth consecutive time that Dahlberg started and the Flames won the game dating back to March 8. It was even more meaningful because it was UIC's 30
th win of the season making the 2017 team the fastest in program history to reach that mark. It is 13
th time in program history and the 10
th time under head coach
Mike Dee that the Flames have won at least 30 games.
Â
Dahlberg's third weekly honor of the season is the seventh of the season for UIC, and the sixth on the mound. The senior also claimed the recognition on March 13 and April 10, while fellow starting pitcher
Reid Birlingmair won on April 3 and April 14. Reliever
Connor Ryan was selected on Feb. 27 and
Scott Ota was named the Batter of the Week on March 27.
Â
Dahlberg leads the Horizon League in opposing batting average (.165) in 11 starts and ranks fourth in ERA (2.06). The 2015 Horizon League Pitcher of the Year is tied for the League lead with seven wins and currently ranks third with 70.0 innings pitched.
Â
In addition to the eight shutouts, UIC's pitching staff ranks high among the national leaders in several other statistical categories. The Flames are second in the NCAA in earned-run average (2.58) and WHIP (1.12), and sixth in hits allowed per nine innings (7.1). The team's 1.1 double plays per game ranks fifth in the nation through April 30.
Â
Dahlberg's next start is expected to come on Friday, May 5, when the Flames host Oakland in a Horizon League doubleheader at Granderson Stadium beginning at 11:05 a.m.
