Gilmartin's service and commitment to UIC's core values earned him the honor.
In his 18th season with the UIC men's basketball program as the head of the athletic training efforts of the UIC Athletic Department is assistant athletic director for sports medicine Mike Gilmartin.
Gilmartin joined the UIC staff in August of 1997 as the head athletic trainer. In 2006 he was named the assistant athletic director for sports medicine.
As the assistant athletic director for sports medicine, Gilmartin coordinates athletic training for all 18 of UIC's athletic teams while serving as the primary athletic trainer for the UIC men's basketball team.
Prior to his arrival at UIC, Gilmartin spent the previous six years at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. With the Wildcats, he spent three years as assistant athletic trainer working and traveling with the football and wrestling programs.
In 1994, Gilmartin was promoted to associate athletic trainer at Northwestern, and in that capacity he was the primary care provider for the men's basketball squad as well as overseeing the baseball program.
Prior to Northwestern, Gilmartin worked for seven years at Elmhurst College as the head athletic trainer. He coordinated medical care for all 14 men's and women's NCAA Division III sports, including the 1985 Division III volleyball champions.
A 1983 graduate of Elmhurst College with a bachelor's degree in athletic training and physical education, Gilmartin has also assisted with the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis, Mo., the Prairie State Games, the NBA Pre-Draft Camp held in Chicago, and the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
