Dec. 5, 2012
CHICAGO – Men’s basketball player Daniel Barnes has been named the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Nov. 26-Dec. 2. Barnes recorded double-digit scoring performances in two UIC road wins last week to extend the Flames’ winning streak to five games. Barnes has reached double figures in four-straight outings and for the week averaged 10.5 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
In last Tuesday’s 58-46 win against Northern Illinois, Barnes scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, which also tied a career-high.
At Northwestern on Saturday, Barnes collected 10 points, six boards and drilled a pair of three-pointers in the 50-44 triumph. The win marked the fourth-straight victory over the Wildcats, dating back to the 2002-03 season and head coach Howard Moore improved to 2-0 versus Big Ten opponents during his Flames tenure.
UIC has garnered some early-season recognition with their 6-1 start, receiving a No. 22 ranking on this week’s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. The Flames begin a three-game homestand that starts with Roosevelt on Wednesday night, continues with undefeated Colorado State on Saturday and ends with Eastern Michigan on Dec. 15.
Barnes is the second consecutive men’s basketball player to earn the UICFlames.com award as teammate Gary Talton picked the honor last week.
