Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago Chancellor Sylvia Manning announced on Monday afternoon the signing of Athletic Director Jim Schmidt to a new five-year contract, which will keep the leader of the Flames in his current position through January 2012.

"Jim Schmidt has done an outstanding job as Director of Athletics," said Manning. "Our athletes are successful on the field and in the classroom. One very obvious example is alumnus Curtis Granderson, who was not only a starting outfielder for the American League champion Detroit Tigers but also earned a bachelor's degree at UIC while leading the Flames baseball team."

Schmidt, who was named UIC's fourth athletic director on January 24, 1997, has guided the department to unprecedented growth during his 10 years of leadership.

Under his direction, the Flames have made 33 NCAA team postseason appearances, including first-ever bids for men's basketball, men's soccer, women's tennis and baseball, improved and expanded athletic facilities across the board and raised awareness levels of the university both regionally and nationally.

All of these successes were achieved on the field while also fostering a departmental community that has enhanced academic performance and made for a dynamic student-athlete experience.

"It is an honor working for such a prestigious institution," said Schmidt. "The excitement surrounding UIC's future makes this extra special. The support from the administration and the entire campus community has moved Flames Athletics in a very positive direction.

"I look forward to great accomplishments that our coaching staff and the many quality student athletes will provide for continued tremendous future success."

Schmidt is in his 25th year at UIC, originally joining the Flames in 1982 as a pitching coach on the baseball staff before being named an assistant to the athletic director in charge of marketing/promotions and daily operations. He was the assistant athletic director for sports information from 1983-86 and assumed the title of associate athletic director in 1987.
