CHICAGO – The UIC athletic department in coordination with its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), spent some time with children of John M Smyth Elementary School on Monday afternoon in an outreach initiative called ‘Hanging with the Flames’. The program is designed for Flames student-athletes to interact with area youth in recreational activities and also to serve as a resource for the youngsters about college athletics.
"It was a great opportunity seeing the children's eyes light up when we walked into the classroom," said women's basketball player Heidi Dahnke. "The children were very interested and wanted to know more about us as athletes. It's always a great experience going to elementary schools and working with kids."
Due to cold temperatures, the event was held indoors as students showcased their latest school projects to the Flames athletes. Each student-athlete then spoke to a group of children about what sport they participated in and how important of a role physical activity played in their childhood. After the talk, student-athletes held a Q&A session, answering a wide variety of questions about being a college athlete. The Flames stayed with the children through lunch and helped monitor the cafeteria.
