UIC Athletics to Join Nation-Wide Movement of #GivingTuesday
Oct. 29, 2013
CHICAGO - The UIC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has selected to unite with the nation-wide movement, #GivingTuesday for its annual service project. In joining the movement, which will be recognized on Dec. 3, 2013, the UIC Athletic Department will offer three ways to assist in this year's holiday project.
"Giving Tuesday offers our student-athletes with a dynamic platform to give back," said SAAC Coordinator and Director of Compliance Shannon Norkus. "One of the main objectives of SAAC is to provide community service and this movement aligns perfectly with our mission. There is no greater time of need for support than the holiday season and we are honored to take part."
UIC's SAAC will team up with Operation Care Package, a public charity whose goal is to remember the U.S. service members stationed overseas by providing them with care packages. Flames' student-athletes will collect the desired supplies and then prepare those items for distribution.
Collection boxes are located in the Port Academic Center and the Athletic Training Room. Click here for a list of supplies that are being requested, and the final day to contribute to this service project is Dec. 4.
In addition to the care packages, SAAC is asking members of the Athletic Department and student-athletes to provide cards that can be sent along with the supplies for the soldiers. Each card will include a personalized message from a UIC student-athlete.
UIC Athletics will also join forces with Livesource to hold a blood drive on Wed., Dec. 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., in the Physical Education Building. Anyone who donates on this day will receive a voucher for two free tickets to the men's basketball game against SMU inside the UIC Pavilion that evening (Dec. 4) at 7:00 p.m. There is a goal of 75 donors, which would aid 225 people in need of blood. Any interested donors should contact Denny Wills (firstname.lastname@example.org) to RSVP with a preferred time to donate.
