UIC Student Athlete Advisory Committee Wants You To Share Your Soles
Oct. 13, 2009 CHICAGO- The UIC Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be accepting donations of all kinds of gently worn shoes to support its Share Your Soles shoe drive this month. Shoes collected in the drive will benefit Share Your Soles, a non-profit organization based in Chicago. The group distributes gently-used shoes to those in need around the world. All kinds of gently worn shoes will be accepted, including athletic shoes, boots, dress shoes, cleats and sandals. At the conclusion of the drive, the UIC SAAC will partner with Share Your Soles to pack up the shoes and deliver them. The goal of the drive is to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes. Share Your Soles drop boxes are now located in the front lobby of the Flames Athletic Center at 839 W. Roosevelt Road and will stay there until Oct. 24 as part of the shoe drive. Shoes will also be collected at the following UIC Athletics events: Tuesday, Oct 20
Friday, Oct 23
Saturday, Oct 24 "We're thrilled to partner with the UIC athletic department on the upcoming shoe drive," said Mona Purdy, the founder and executive director of Share Your Soles. "There is so much need around the world and it's great to see the student-athletes at UIC step up and help Share Your Soles and our mission. "I am in great hopes this is the beginning of an annual collaboration of efforts and also hope UIC's participation inspires other schools to do the same." "We can't wait to begin collecting shoes on campus," UIC SAAC president Cameron Seebeck said. "We need the help of fans, students, faculty and staff to reach our goal of 1,000 pairs of shoes." "The SAAC is determined not only to collect shoes," Seebeck said, "but help Mona and Share Your Soles prepare the shipments and deliver them where these shoes are needed most." UIC SAAC's Share Your Soles drive got off to a great start thanks to Ileana Tejada and the student-athletes and administration at Cal Poly Pomona. Cal Poly Pomona donated 68 lbs of shoes to the drive. For more information on Share Your Soles, visit the organization's official website at shareyoursoles.org. |
