UIC Cancels Sporting Events For The Weekend
Chicago, Ill. - Following Thursday night's volleyball contest between the University of Illinois at Chicago and DePaul, UIC Athletic Director Jim Schmidt has announced the cancellation of all UIC sporting events for the weekend of September 14-16th, due to the recent national tragedy.
"We feel that this was the right decision in order to pay the proper respect to the victims and families of the attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania," Schmidt said. "These games are really secondary to what's important in the grand scheme of things."
"Prior to those decisions, we were following the wishes of the NCAA and the White House to get back to `business as usual'," Schmidt continued. "Obviously, with so much new information coming forward, it was a given that we must take time to reflect and mourn with the rest of the country."
The men's tennis team was scheduled to take part in the Western Illinois singles invitational this weekend, while the women's tennis team was to participate in the DePaul Invitational in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Prior to Schmidt's announcement, UW-Green Bay canceled the 2001 FILA Soccer Classic that UIC was scheduled to participate in while the rest of the Blue Demon Volleyball Invitational was immediately canceled following the UIC-DePaul game.
