SAAC to Host Annual Welcome Picnic for on Sept. 6
CHICAGO – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is scheduled to host its annual welcome picnic for all UIC student-athletes on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. in the south fields behind the Flames Athletic Center. SAAC President MaryKate Imrie (women’s volleyball) and Athletic Director Jim Schmidt will speak to crowd of nearly 500 athletes, coaches and administrators about the 2012-13 athletic season.
Imrie and Schmidt will encourage all student-athletes to take an active role in the numerous SAAC initiatives that focus largely on community service. Last year, UIC SAAC partnered with the Salvation Army to provide Christmas presents for a single mother and her two-year old son. They also teamed up with the Special Olympics to host a skills competition at UIC’s Physical Education Building which was staffed by several Flames athletes and staff.
About SAAC: A student-athlete advisory committee is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. An Association-wide SAAC was adopted by legislation approved at the 1989 NCAA Convention, and was formed primarily to review and offer student-athlete input on NCAA activities and proposed legislation that affected student-athletes.
The mission of the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.
