UIC Athletics Wins 2008-09 Horizon League Men's All-Sports Award
May 27, 2009 CHICAGO- The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Intercollegiate Athletics captured the 2008-09 Horizon League Men's All-Sports Award while finishing second in this year's race for the coveted James J. McCafferty Trophy that recognizes the League's all-sports champion. The Flames earned the League's men's all-sports title for the second time in the last three years, earning the award in 2006-07. This was also the third time in the last four years that UIC has finished among the League's top two all-sports programs. The Flames won the McCafferty Trophy in 2006-07 and finished second in the standings in 2005-06. The men's all-sports award was presented to UIC Director of Athletics Jim Schmidt during the League's Executive Council meeting dinner in Oak Brook on Wednesday, May 27. "This honor is indicative of the great coaches here at UIC," said Schmidt. "We wouldn't have been able to achieve such balanced success across programs without the outstanding support from our campus. "Most importantly, this is a symbol of the distinguished accomplishments of UIC student-athletes and the efforts they put forth everyday," Schmidt concluded. UIC finished with 28 points on the men's side, beating out second-place Butler by three points, and 46 points overall in the McCafferty standings. Milwaukee edged out the Flames for the overall title with 49 points. This past year the Flames captured three total Horizon League regular season titles, garnering top billing in two men's sports (men's soccer, baseball) and one women's sport (softball). UIC also won its first-ever League championship in men's swimming and diving and cemented its 13th consecutive League women's tennis crown. The symbol of a successful broad-based athletic program, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to the member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points. Schools earn points based on their finish in all 19 championship sports sponsored by the League. For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, points are awarded based on combined regular season and championship finishes. In the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis, points are based on performance in the League championship.
