April 27, 2006
Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago Athletic Department was recognized for its outstanding academic achievement by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports as it was named to the program's Outreach and Degree Completion Honor Roll.
UIC was one of just 40 schools to receive the award, which recognizes on-going commitment to degree completion from student-athletes that have exhausted eligibility.
In the last report, which took into account the 2004-05 school year, all of the 16 UIC student-athletes that returned for a fifth-year following completion of eligibility met requirements to earn their degree.
"The UIC Athletic Department takes great pride in developing leaders both on an off the playing field," said Athletic Director Jim Schmidt. "This is a mission shared by the Consortium and we are honored to receive praise from such an esteemed organization.
"The graduation of our student-athletes in our No. 1 goal here at UIC, and I think an award such as this validates our efforts."
