Ten UIC Student-Athletes Named to HL All-Academic Teams|

INDIANAPOLIS - Ten UIC student-athletes were named to the Horizon League's Winter Academic All-League Teams, it was announced by League officials from their Indianapolis headquarters Monday. The Flames' 10 selections ranked third in the Horizon League.
"It's great to see our student-athletes recognized for their performance in the classroom," said UIC Athletic Director Jim Schmidt. "Over the past four semesters, our athletic program has averaged a collective 3.0 GPA, and that's something we're very proud of."
The UIC men's and women's indoor track & field teams both collected a department-high three All-Academic selections, as did the men's swimming & diving team. Junior Angelos Karkalis (3.43 GPA/Psychology) from the men's indoor track & field team picked up his second-straight All-Academic honor, after collecting the same plaudit last fall for his athletic and academic success during cross country season. Senior Roy Mwale (3.51/Architecture) and sophomore Brad Somerfield (3.53/Biology) also represented the Flames' track & field team on the Winter Academic All-League Team.
Academic All-League honorees from the men's swimming & diving team were juniors Woody Lord (3.50) and Brian Sivak (3.57) and sophomore Vince Errichiello (3.65/Chemical Engineering). Junior Melanie Waszak represented the women's swimming & diving team with a 3.46 cumulative GPA in Nursing.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
