UIC Positioned at Fourth in McCafferty Trophy Standings

    April 16, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS – UIC heads into the spring championship season in fourth place with 22.5 points after the Horizon League announced the current standings of the 2013-14 McCafferty Trophy, given to the all-sports champion of the conference, on Wednesday.

Men’s soccer placed first in the regular season and finished as the runner-up in the conference championship. Additionally on the men’s side, swimming & diving took third and indoor track & field came in fourth in their respective championships.

The women’s cross country team brought in a second-place finish out of nine teams, while women’s basketball ended the regular season in fourth and went on to compete in the semifinals of the tournament.

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference’s first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League’s 19 championship sports.

For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular-season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
