CHICAGO – Softball player Courtney Heeley has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of March 11 – 17 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning. Heely guided the Flames to a 3-1 record this past weekend at the Hoosier Classic as the junior left fielder went 4-for-9 (.444) from the plate and belted her first homer of the season. For her efforts, Heeley was also named the Horizon League Batter of the Week.
Heely came up big in Friday’s 7-6 win against Toledo as she posted the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle to plate teammate Jackie Fletcher. Heely went 2-for-3 versus the Rockets with two RBI and one run scored.
The Glendale, Ariz., native followed that up the next morning in a rematch against Toledo with a solo home run in the third inning to give UIC an early 1-0 lead. The Flames eventually won the contest, 6-5, as Heely tallied two runs and went 1-for-2 from the dish.
Heely now leads the team with an on-base percentage of .397 and owns a batting average of .300.
The Flames are scheduled commence Horizon League action this weekend with a three-game series against Green Bay. Play is set to begin on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at Noon CT.
