It has been described by many as the “best batter’s eye in all of college baseball.” Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium is the new home for the UIC baseball team.

Former Flame and current New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson generously donated a sum of $5 million to help fund the $10 million ballpark, the largest one-time gift from a professional athlete back to their alma mater in history, according to Sports Illustrated.

The stadium officially opened on April 17, 2014 after Granderson was on-hand to cut the ribbon and throw out the first pitch.

The true motivation behind Granderson’s gift was the community impact, especially on Chicago youth. Granderson Stadium has already begun hosting several area little league teams for games, camps and clinics. Thousands of children throughout the Chicagoland community are expected to compete inside the state-of-the-art facility on an annual basis.
